News Longford v Clane 22-Oct-06 Lonford 18 Clane 14 A last minute try denied Clane what would have been a great win away to Longford in the Leinster League. Clane started well and won two early penalties but both were pulled wide. A transgression on the 22 gave Longford a chance to get on the scoreboard which the out half took. Late in the half Longfords Centre went over for a try in the corner which was converted to give them a 10 - 0 half time lead. Clanes half time team talk focused them more clearly to the job and the setpiece started to function more cleanly. A clearance kick by the longford Fullback found Anto Hennessy who linked up beautifully with Niall Brennan, and Cormac McEvoy to allow Mark "Gunshow" Coonan over under the posts. Longford came back strongly but outstanding defending held out the home team. Eventually Clane drove longford off their own scrum on Clanes own 5 metre line. When the scrum half rushed his pass Luke McCormack intercepted. he fed John Gamble who broke out to half way and had the presence of mind to offload in the tackle. Cormac McEvoy completed the move under the posts and added the conversion to leave clane 14 - 10 up. Longford came back again to add a penalty to their score . 14- 13 and so it remained until 8 minutes into injury time when Longford broke out themselves. The winger made 60 yards before passing inside to his centre to score. Clane are home to Athboy on 5th November in the next encounterin the league Longford v Clane Seconds 22-Oct-06 Lonford22 Clane 20 Clane’s away fixture to Longford saw the return of several familiar faces to the team. Longford’s kick off was gathered in by Clane and with good recycling gave the ¾’s quick ball which was taken to just outside Longford’s “22” Longford conceded a penalty trying to staunch Clane’s attack which was successfully converted by Tony McLoughlin. Longford retaliated with attacking runs from their pack and sloppy defending by Clane saw Longford rewarded with a try. Good interlinking play between “Jools” Hennessy and the boot of Peter Dunne gave good field position allowing Clane to attack from the set piece. A great interception from the half way line saw Clane cross the Try line. Again Longford’s attacking pack gave way to their 2nd try giving the score at half time 10-8 to Longford. After a Rejuvenating team talk by the effervescent manager “Marty Corbett” Clane opened the half with 2 great trys that were down to total commitment by all of the team. Longford with the interjection of several pairs of fresh legs in the final 20 mins of the game allowed them to finish the game with 2 further trys giving the final score of Clane 20 Lonford22. Clane’s performance was one of total commitment and 110% effort by every player. The Rumour mill was working over time again this weekend, with several alleged sightings of the lesser smiling Corbett beast ON the field of play…but I never saw him at the bottom of any rucks…. Man Of Match: All 15 Players Clane Seconds v Tullamore 15-Oct-06 Clane 2nds welcomed Tullamore 3rds for what turned out to be a hard, fast paced & high scoring encounter. The Referee’s decision to award early “Sin Bins” & various “Warnings” to both teams displayed what a High octane encounter this would be. Good 1st up tackling, complimented with strong rucking & mauling by both forwards & backs gave Clane the edge, in what was a physical battle from the start. A fast paced 1st half saw Clane only 5 points ahead at the break. The 2nd half saw Snipping runs off the back of scrums from “Jools” Hennessy again followed up by solid rucking gave Clane a good platform for fast 2nd phase ball, which was rewarded with further scores. In defence Billy Murphy relived pressure from the attacking side with great kicking from the hand. A solid team performance in front of a large home crowd gave way to rumours that Marty Corbett was seen to be smiling on the sideline, but I must add theses are just rumours….. Man Of Match: Tony Blake: Solid tackling in defence & strong attacking running. Try Of Match: The “Loose head prop” : A great individual, skilful try from 1 yard out approx Clane v CYM Terenure 8 Oct 06 Clane's first team defeated CYM in the first home league game of the season Golf Classic Clane RFC's annual golf classic will take place on October 13th in Knockanally Golf Club.
